Homemade Greek Yogurt

The first time I went to the grocery store to purchase Greek yogurt, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the price!! I somehow convinced myself to fork over the money for this new-found treat and made sure to savor every bite.

By accident, I figured out how to make my own Greek yogurt at home. I simply bought “regular” yogurt and drained the extra liquid from it. When I discovered how simple it was to make my own Greek yogurt, I felt as though it was too good to be true!

Here’s how it is done.

All you need is “regular” yogurt. (I’ve only made Greek yogurt with plain yogurt, so I am not sure if flavored yogurts would work for this as well but it would be worth a try!) I like to use Nancy’s Lowfat (or nonfat) Plain Yogurt. However, I did buy Mountain High plain yogurt at Costco the other day, so I’ll be curious to see how it compares.

Set-up:

Place a paper towel (or coffee filter) in a strainer. Then place the strainer on top of a bowl to catch the water that drains off. Pour “regular” yogurt into the strainer and place it in the fridge for several hours.

Several hours later. . . . tah-dah, you now have Greek yogurt!!

I love adding granola, fresh/dried fruit, honey, or jam to Greek yogurt!! It is so rich and creamy–almost like ice cream (well, not quite)!

  1. Michelle, are there health benefits to Greek yogurt, or is it a texture thing? I’ve never been opposed to the texture of “regular” yogurt.

    • Great question!! The biggest difference with Greek yogurt is that it has a lot more protein in it–depending upon the brand, up to twice as much!! A lot of people (like myself) who don’t eat a lot of meat eat it as a way to get more protein in their diet.
